    Project Overview
National Public Radio (NPR) consolidated its offices and operations into a new headquarters facility.

Critical to the success of NPR's relocation was maintaining operations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, throughout the project. Management Alternatives (M/A) developed and monitored a detailed Occupancy Plan that accommodated the time and sequence of telephone, data, satellite, audio engineering and external communication links, as well as all of the requirements for the operating divisions within NPR.

Our Occupancy Plan accommodated the build-out and fit-up of six new broadcast studios, each requiring a 30-day installation and testing period. Because the new studios used a mixture of reused and newly purchased equipment, they could not become fully operational prior to the move. We developed and tested an equipment pull sequence and schedule to ensure that studio equipment could be disassembled, cleaned, prepared for the physical move, cataloged and relocated in accordance with a precise order, sequence and schedule while NPR broadcasted from a remote location.

    Never Off-Air
M/A planned and managed the preparation, relocation and reinstallation of NPR's ROLM PBX and DEC VAX computer system, which also required a migration plan that included uninterrupted connectivity between NPR's headquarters, the White House and NPR's national bureaus throughout the country. We worked closely with the Audio Engineering and Distribution divisions to develop a plan to maintain satellite feeds to NPR's Public Radio Network throughout the course of the move.

M/A planned the relocation of all multimedia and high-density collections and libraries; a satellite repair depot; quartermaster stores; and a "fly-away" equipment area that required 24-hour access.

M/A chaired regular meetings of the Transitions Operations Committee and NPR's Move Coordinators and attended various construction and media meetings. We developed a scope of work for the moving companies, prepared selection criteria, conducted the pre-bid conference, analyzed the responses and recommended a moving company. M/A prepared informational material for all employees, conducted Pre-Move Briefings to advise employees of their responsibilities throughout the move period and provided on-site supervision for three pre-move phases.
