    Project Overview
Management Alternatives (M/A) serves as Relocation and Communications Project Manager for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Building 37 Modernization Project. The mission of this eight-phase project is to completely renovate and modernize the 30-year-old building, which houses NCI's primary research laboratories and associated lab support spaces.

M/A is responsible for planning and executing the floor-by-floor relocation of Building 37 occupants into their permanent, renovated space. We develop a comprehensive Relocation Plan for each relocation phase, which outlines the move of research laboratories, including staff, and other supporting spaces. M/A also manages interior relocations outside of the floor-by-floor modernization.

As Communications Manager, M/A produces a quarterly newsletter, fact card, electronic bulletin on NCI's intranet site, and created an informational lobby kiosk. We established a fax and e-mail hotline for modernization- and relocation-related questions. Additionally, under the direction of the Communications Team are Neighborhood Groups comprising representatives from laboratories surrounding the space currently being modernized. Neighborhood Groups meet to maintain open lines of communication between building occupants and the Project Team.

    Minimizing Disruption, Ensuring Continuity
A primary directive of the project is to minimize disruption to Building 37 scientists and ensure that their critical research is not compromised by modernization activities during the 8 years of renovation and relocations. Maintaining open lines of communication between project principals and the scientific community is imperative to achieving this goal. In the initial planning stages of the project, we worked with NCI and other project participants to develop the organizational structure of the overall project team. The overall team structure, with its working teams and committees, facilitates two-way communication between the facility's scientific community and the project participants. An M/A principal serves on the Oversight Board, which oversees project activities and represents the Project Team to senior NCI Management.

In developing the Relocation Plans for each phase, M/A identifies the steps required to prepare and safely move highly sensitive equipment and biological specimens from the research laboratories without disrupting ongoing research. We developed the logistics plan to prepare and move the NCI Vivarium (Animal Facility). M/A identifies vendors required to prepare, move, and install specialized equipment for each relocation phase. Once specialty vendors are determined, we coordinate their activities, incorporating them into the Relocation Plan.
